Content is Still King - How Well Does Your Content Reflect You?

entrepreneurs Nov 15, 2018

I questioned my decision to blog about content being king. It’s old news. Everyone knows it, right? But after a few recent meetings with prospects (now clients), I realized that too many small business owners and entrepreneurs have gotten so lost in the realm of social media execution, that they have totally lost sight of the importance of content. It's the content that adds value to your audience, not all the intricacies of how you distribute it.

The questions I receive are around how often should I post, what should I post, when should I post, how long should a post be…

I see entrepreneurs looking outward for answers. What is the ‘other’ person doing? What tool should I use?

I encourage YOU to break out of this nonsense and shine! Look inward. What do you want to share and why? Focus less on the details of execution and focus more on how YOU interrelate with your business. Focus more on knowing what sets you apart – not because you want to ‘kill’ the competition, but because you want to add value to your audience. Your audience is who matters! Do you know what your audience wants to hear about? Can you easily define your audience? Can you break your audience down into segments and clearly define how you can HELP (not sell) individuals in each segment?

If you don’t have top-of-mind answers to each of these questions, it’s time to step back and refresh on the basics. Set aside time (calendar it RIGHT NOW, or better yet – do it right now). Write down your audience segments, your business goals, how you can help each segment, WHY you want to help each segment. Maybe it’s also time for you to update your vision statement.

Then take time to reintroduce yourself to you. While this might sound silly, I challenge you to consider how well you really know yourself, who you are today, what’s in your heart. Time passes, we change, we experience new challenges, we overcome obstacles, we grow… and then we don’t alway take the time to consider the implications of not updating our business models, products and services to reflect our growth, our changes. So how have you personally changed over the last year, 5 years, etc.?

As an entrepreneur, does your business still 100% reflect YOU? I think this is where a there can be a major disconnect. When we clearly know ourselves, our beliefs, what makes us tick, we can more easily and more authentically help those we serve. It doesn't matter what type of business you’re in, whether you’re a business coach, a nonprofit, or are selling widgets. The more you know yourself, the more you express your true self, the more you can authentically connect with your audience.

Then, you will know what content will add value to your audience, you will be guiding yourself to know the appropriate length, frequency, and so forth.

Then... let it flow. Write great content that you would find helpful if you were your audience. Write content that resonates with your personality. Write when you are feeling connected. Share this content in a manner as you would a conversation. Release some of the formalities. Let yourself shine through, let others get to know you.

So yes, content is still king. But let that content reflect you, your dreams, your aspirations. Let that content ring true with your audience. You control the reigns. Forge your own path.

PS: If you’re not sure how to go about refreshing the basics, I walk you through these steps in my course From Emails to Conversations via interactive exercises. Don’t let the title mislead you. This work will help you more authentically share value in all your content. Your blogs, social media, emails, and yes, even networking.
